A standard chewy and filling oat flapjack which can be used as the basis for many variations

  • 170 g margarine
  • 100 g caster sugar
  • 170 p porridge oats
  • 60 g self raising flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2-3 tsp of Golden Syrup optional


Preparatory Tasks

  • Preheat oven to 190°C
  • Line an 8" x 12" baking tin (approx. 20cm x 30cm) with greaseproof paper


  • Melt the margarine in a pan over low heat
  • Add the sugar and stir until dissolved
  • (Optional) Add the golden syrup and continue stirring
  • Remove from the heat


  • Add the oats, sifted flour and salt into the warm mixture
  • Stir until everything is completely coated
  • Pour the mixture into the baking tin and level it off


  • Bake on centre shelf for about 20 mins (until a light brown colour)
  • Leave to cool on a wire rack
  • Cut into required shapes
